DMK president M. Karunanidhi on Saturday demanded to know whether the State government had decided to buy power from other States at a higher rate, when it could be procured from windmill power generators at a cheaper rate.
In a statement here, he wondered why Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, who made an elaborate statement on power situation in the State in the Assembly, had chosen to remain silent on windmill power generation in the State.
“In a policy statement in 2011, the government announced its decision to produce 10,000 MW power through windmills. But now the government is said to have decided against it. Is it true? The government can easily overcome the power crisis by buying power from private windmill power generators,” he said.

Mr. Karunanidhi said if Chief Minister Jayalalithaa could take pride in making Tamil Nadu a power-surplus State between 2001 and 2006, the foundation for the achievement was laid during the DMK regime between 1996 and 2001.
Reacting to her allegation that the DMK rule lacked administrative skills, he said the present chairman of the Tangedco was the finance secretary in the DMK government, the present finance secretary had also held the same portfolio then.
