The City Corporation will soon be completing the works on walkers’ pathway at VOC Grounds, a long-felt need of morning and evening walkers.
Work has been in progress for the last two months. The Corporation, which is executing the scheme under the government’s self-sufficiency scheme, plans to complete the pathway within another month. Of the project cost of Rs. 18 lakh, Erode MP had provided Rs. 3 lakh from his constituency development fund. Of the remaining Rs. 15 lakh, the VOC Walkers’ Welfare Association has pooled in Rs. 5 lakh, and the rest was sponsored by Canara Bank.
The walkers’ pathway will have layerings of water-bound macadam, brick jelly and sand-gravel mix, concrete slabs on the sides, and fencing. Urinals for men and women will also be constructed within the project cost, official sources said.

The open site, which was once a lorry shed, was approved by District Collector S. Prabakar. A few hundreds of walkers enrolled with the Association have been using a portion of the VOC Stadium for their daily walks. But, using the stadium becomes difficult at times of major sporting events and during Independence Day and Republic Day. The new facility will ensure continuity of the morning and evening walking exercise, Association Secretary Senthil Kumar said.
