The State Higher Education Ministry is consulting the Law Ministry over the possible action to be taken against A. Ganapathi, Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University, who was arrested by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption on Saturday on corruption charges.
With academics questioning why Mr. Ganapathi was not sacked or suspended for being the first incumbent to be arrested on graft charges, Higher Education Minister K.P. Anbalagan told The Hindu in an interview on Sunday that action would be taken once the Law Ministry gave its opinion. “We are keen on eliminating corruption in the higher education system,” Mr. Anbalagan said adding, “We will not hesitate to take action against anyone.”
Mr. Ganapathi was caught red-handed while accepting a bribe to regularise the appointment of an assistant professor.
