March 29, 2017 12:46 am | Updated 12:46 am IST - Chennai

Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) system designed by the Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) reached the city from Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh on Monday. Five engineers from BEL will start work on attaching the VVPAT system on Wednesday.

“The Chennai District Election Office has received 385 units of VVPAT by train,” said an official.

The VVPAT system will be attached to 380 control units and 1,360 ballot units for use in the byelections to R.K. Nagar on April 12. The BEL engineers completed work on control units and ballot units on Sunday. As the transit from the backward district of Jalaun in UP was reportedly challenging, the engineers from Bangalore had to wait for a few more days in the city. They will start work on Wednesday and complete the process in two days.

The elector will be able to view through the transparent window of the printer a printed paper slip showing the serial number, name and the symbol of the candidate before the paper slip drops in the drop box.

The Chennai District Election Office will start awareness campaign for political parties and electors of R.K. Nagar shortly. A demonstration of VVPAT system is likely to be organised by the returning officer for all candidates and political parties. The demonstration will be done by engineers for voters at suitable locations in the constituency. Poster showing the method of voting on EVMs with VVPAT will be pasted at prominent places in all polling stations.
