Demanding regular supply of drinking water to a few areas of Tenkasi, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi cadres, led by M. Chandran, Tenkasi union secretary, submitted a petition to Collector M. Karunakaran on Monday.

They said over 200 families living in East Paaraiyadi Street in ward 10 of Tenkasi municipality had not been getting water for the past five years though domestic drinking water connections had been given to them. While being forced to pay the drinking water tax every month, the poor population was taking water in their cycles and two-wheelers from a source situated a km away from their houses.

Hence, the Collector should instruct the Tenkasi municipality administration to ensure regular supply to their colony.

The petitioners also said concrete cement road work on East Paaraiyadi Street was suspended a couple of weeks ago following the commencement of work on the drainage channel construction in their area. Though drainage channel construction work had been completed, work on re-laying the cement road was yet to resume and the delay causes much hardship to the residents.

Hence, the urban civic body officials should be instructed to complete the work at the earliest.

A group of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam cadres submitted petition to Dr. Karunakaran seeking the shifting of electric poles occupying a portion of the road at Melapalayam.

The petitioners said hundreds of vehicles going to Cheranmahadevi, Veervanaallur, Kallidaikurichi, Ambasamudram, Vickramasingapuram and Papanasam were using the road traversing Melapalayam every day. However, this busy road was so narrow due to the encroachments by the business establishments and the electric poles were occupying a portion of this road.

Consequently, the stretch between Bypass Road and Karungulam was witnessing frequent accidents. Hence, the encroachments should be evicted while displacing the electric poles to a safer distance from the road, the petitioners said.
