With a new government in place, there is growing anticipation on the appointment of Vice-Chancellors at University of Madras and Madurai Kamaraj University. In both cases, it was the Senate-nominated member who was at the centre of the controversy.
The V-C search panel of Madras University went into limbo after one of the three members, R. Surendra Prasad, who had been elected by the Senate, differed with the other two panellists. The tenure of Madurai Kamaraj University V-C Kalyani Mathivanan, ended in July last and a three-member committee was constituted in August. But one of the members, Mu. Ramasamy, resigned in November citing irregularities in the selection process. With the model code of conduct kicking in soon, the government had to keep in abeyance the appointment.

“Ideally, in the case of MKU a senate meeting has to be held and fresh elections must be conducted as a member has tendered his resignation,” said a professor who is in one of the search committees. “This would involve calling for a meeting of the senate and then issuing a notification. The process would take at least six weeks’ time,” he added. Those involved in the selection process, however, said a clearer picture would emerge next week.
