Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko will meet Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy at Thiruvananthapuram on February 7 to seek his support to stall the proposed India-based Neutrino Observatory project in Theni district.
Talking to reporters here on Sunday, he said the Rs. 1,500-crore project would adversely affect the environment and cause pollution.
“It will not only be detrimental to the life of people of Theni district but also to those in Idukki district in Kerala,” he said. He raised apprehension that 631 noxious chemical substances could be let into the ground while pumping water and one lakh tonnes of dust particles could be emitted.

Mr. Vaiko charged that the BJP-led government at the Centre was acting against the interests of people of Tamil Nadu.
The Centre was extending support to construct dams across Cauvery in Karanataka against the wish of Tamil Nadu. It also remained silent despite objections being raised by farmers to the methane gas project in Thanjavur.
The MDMK would mobilise cadres of all parties to lay siege to Central government offices on February 18 in protest against these two projects.
