Nearly 200 persons were detained for demonstrating against the draft U.S. resolution for a domestic investigation into the alleged war crimes during the end of the Eelam war.

MDMK general secretary Vaiko and representatives from over 32 organisations courted arrest while protesting against the draft U.S. resolution for a domestic investigation into the alleged war crimes during the end of the Eelam war.

Nearly 200 persons were detained and taken to a wedding hall in Egmore from Rajarathinam stadium, where Mr. Vaiko and representatives of “May Pathinezhu Iyakkam” had gathered in the morning.

The protesters had hoped to lay siege to the U.S. consulate in Chennai, but a posse of police personnel had barricaded the roads at the protest venue, leading to the protesters courting arrest.

“America, Britain, Montenegro, Macedonia supported by Russia, China, Cuba and so many other countries joined together to kill justice — justice to be rendered for Tamils, who have been massacred, mercilessly killed; genocide took place. We will mobilise the youth, students in Tamil Nadu and wherever Tamils are living. The Indian government has continuously betrayed the Tamils. First, the UPA government and now, the Modi government,” Mr. Vaiko said at the rally.

The protesters demanded an international investigation into the alleged genocide of Tamils, referendum for Tamil Eelam and lifting of the ban on the LTTE by all the countries.
