Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko has been chosen as coordinator of the People’s Welfare Front formed by the MDMK, the CPI, the CPI(M) and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi at the consultative meet of the front held here on Monday.
Giving the details, Mr. Vaiko said that an eight-member committee to draft a Minimum Action Plan to approach the Assembly elections has been formed with two members from each of the parties. The panel would meet in Chennai on October 23 to discuss the modalities and aspects of the draft and the final document would be released in Chennai on November 2. The front would organise a massive rally in Coimbatore on November 28 to propagate the salient features of the Minimum Action Plan.
Mr. Vaiko, in the company of CPI State Secretary R. Mutharasan, CPI (M) State Secretary G. Ramakrishnan and VCK founder Thol. Thirumavalavan, said that the consultative meeting of the front’s constituent parties held on Monday in Tiruvarur had entrusted on him the responsibility to act as coordinator.

Tracing the formation of the movement, Mr. Vaiko pointed out that idea for the alliance emerged on July 27 in which the present allies along with the Manithaneya Makkal Katchi had decided to cooperate in their struggle against the “anti-people” policies of the Central and the State governments by highlighting a 15-point charter of demands. “We had also resolved not to have any truck with the BJP, the Congress, the AIADMK and the DMK then,” Mr. Vaiko said.
The leaders later spoke at a rally here in which they criticised the Union and the State governments for the inability to get water from Karnataka for the standing samba paddy crop.

The leaders slammed the Centre for not constituting the Cauvery Management Board and the Cauvery Water Regulating Authority as per the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal final award and wanted that done without any delay.
