Unauthorised college building sealed

April 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:54 am IST - VELLORE:

The Member Secretary of the Vellore Local Planning Authority (VLPA) has closed and sealed the office room and Principal’s room in the building housing the NDM College of Education in Kagitha Pattarai here on Wednesday.

The action was taken on the orders of the Vellore District Collector, who is the ex officio president of the VLPA since the building with ground floor and first floor has been constructed without obtaining the approval of the VLPA.

R. Nanthagopal, Collector and president of the VLPA, said in a release that the VLPA has delegated to the Vellore Corporation the powers to approve residential buildings (with ground and first floors) built within the Corporation limits with a plinth area of up to 4000 square feet and commercial buildings (G + 1) built up to a plinth area of 2000 square feet.

However, houses, public buildings and educational institution buildings constructed with a plinth area of up to 25,000 square feet and a height of up to 15 metres are subject to the approval of the VLPA.

Under these circumstances, it has come to the notice of the VLPA that many houses and educational institution buildings within the Vellore Corporation limits, whose approval is beyond the powers of the Corporation, are being built without the approval of the VLPA.

It was found that the building (G + 1) housing the NDM College of Education within the Vellore Corporation limits had been built without the approval of the VLPA. Despite several notices the VLPA had not received any proposal from the management of the educational institution seeking its approval for the building. Therefore, on the orders of the Collector-cum-president of VLPA, the Member Secretary closed and sealed the office room and Principal’s room of the college building at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Collector warned that such action would continue against all unapproved buildings.
