The University Grants Commission (UGC) has offered to help Alagappa University to develop the two areas it is famous for — Women’s Studies and Physical Education, said its Vice-Chairman H. Devaraj.
Talking to reporters after inaugurating a conference on ‘Women and social transformation,’ organised by Alagappa University here on Friday, he said that the UGC would consider upgrading the Centre for Women’s Studies in the university as an advanced study centre.
The University Grants Commission would consider if the Centre for Women’s Studies submitted a proposal for the advanced study centre status, he said adding “there is a possibility of getting it since the centre has been functioning for more than 25 years.”

The UGC was funding 152 women study centres and four advanced study centres, sanctioning Rs. 10 crore to Rs. 12 crore to each centre every year, he said.
Mr. Devaraj suggested that Vice-Chancellor S. Subbiah could send a proposal to the UGC for establishing ‘Excellence in Sports Medicine,’ a discipline getting more attention in the 12th five-year plan.
With UGC support, the university could start a course on Sports Medicine by combining Bio-technology and other departments, he said.

He said that the UGC had shortlisted Alagappa University in the list of seven universities in the State for according the status of ‘University with potential for excellence.’
Mr. Subbiah said that the university had become the first institution in the State to start Paralympic courses.
