R. Amsakumar, a 65-year-old DMK member from Kullakkapalayam near Pollachi, died of a heart attack on Saturday evening, allegedly due to stress caused by DMK leader M. Karunanidhi’s health condition.

According to party sources, Amsakumar, who was in charge of the DMK unit in Ward 4 of Kullakkapalayam, had been following the news about Mr. Karunanidhi’s health on television for the past couple of days.

In Udhagamandalam, a 55-year-old resident died of a heart attack, allegedly after he heard rumours that the DMK leader’s health was deteriorating. The police said Rajendran, a party functionary, complained of chest pain in the morning and was rushed to a private hospital, where he was declared ‘brought dead’.

DMK members from Udhagamandalam said Mr. Rajendran was a committed party worker who idolised Mr. Karunanidhi.

“His family told us that he refused to leave the house for the last three days and was constantly listening to health bulletins regarding our leader’s condition,” a party functionary said. Many district party functionaries, including district secretary of the DMK B.M. Mubarak, condoled his death.
