The Health Department is reaching out to the tribal villagers of Naickeneri through a special tribal health camp for residents on Saturday.
Organised under the aegis of Tamil Nadu Health Systems Project (TNHSP), the camp will take general health check-up, ante natal care and screening for non-communicable diseases (NCD) to the tribal villagers at Naickeneri.
A. Kennedy, district project coordinator of TNHSP, Vellore said that two medical teams from the Primary Health Centre (PHC), Madhanur and SRM’s outreach programme would screen the villagers. The team from Madhanur PHC will consist of 22 members, while that from SRM will have a doctor, two nurses, a pharmacist and a lab technician.

“This will be a comprehensive health check up for the tribal villagers. Through this programme, a team consisting of a doctor and three nurses will screen the villagers for hypertension, diabetes. Women will also be screened for cervical and breast cancers,” he said.
The camp aims to take ante natal care to villagers. “We will identify high risk pregnant mothers. Immunisation for ante natal mothers and children will be carried out as per the national immunisation schedule,” he added.
In general health check-up, people will be screened for hypertension, diabetes and blood sugar. The height and weight will also be measured to check body mass index. Based on their metabolic status, they will be taught life style modification, given counselling for diet.

As per the programme, those above 30 years will be screened. However, all those who attend the special camp will be checked for NCD.
“Cervical cancer screening will be done through Visual Inspection using Acetic Acid and Visual Inspection using Lugol’s Iodine (VIA and VILI). Women will be screened for breast cancer. Self-examination of the breasts will also be taught,” he added.
With Naickeneri having a primary school, TNHSP will screen all the students for their height, weight, nutritional status, presence of upper respiratory tract infection, worm infestation, anaemia and white patches, if any.
