Transport workers attached to the Centre of Indian Trade Unions staged a dharna without shirts in front of the regional office at Vannarpet here on Tuesday to highlight their demands.

They said that the undue delay in disbursing retirement benefits to the workers on superannuation had seriously affected their families as they could not meet their medical expenses or expenses incurred in conducting marriages of their daughters. Similarly, the administration was refusing to settle the monetary benefits of the existing employees and failing to pay the amount being deducted from their salary towards insurance premium.

The four sets of uniforms to be given to the transport workers as announced by the Chief Minister and stitching charges were yet to be given to them, and the amount deducted from their salary towards repayment of loans they had got from the workers’ society was yet to be paid, they alleged. President of the union S. Vincent presided over the agitation.

A similar protest was organised in front of the transport depot at Ranithottam in Nagercoil.
