Programme on clinico-pathological approach to liver diseases

The Department of Pathology and Hepatology, Christian Medical College, Vellore is organising a 2-day Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on `Clinico-Pathological Approach to Liver Diseases at the CMC campus in Bagayam here on January 23 and 24.

Briefing newspersons about the CME Programme here on Tuesday, C.E. Eapen, Medical Superintendent of CMC said that liver diseases are increasingly common in India, whether due to viruses, lifestyle or alcohol.

Liver diseases in children are also increasingly recognised as new diagnostic modalities, and treatments are developed.

Workshop

Biopsy pathology of the liver is a cornerstone in the diagnosis and management of liver diseases, and this will be the focus of a half-day workshop on Liver Pathology which will precede the CME and will be held at the CMC Hospital premises on the afternoon of January 22.

Banumathi Ramakrishna, Head of the Department of Pathology of the CMC said that the objective of the CME is to train young practitioners of pathology and post-graduate students on liver pathology, and interpretation of liver histology.

A team of international and national experts will discuss a wide array of topics.

Topics

Besides discussing globally important topics like viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease and liver transplant, there will be detailed discussion on liver diseases which are unique to India, such as non-cirrhotic portal fibrosis and copper-related liver disease in children.

Panel discussion

There will be a panel discussion on Pathology of Liver Transplantation on the evening of January 23. Stefan Hubscher, Professor of Liver Pathology, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University of Birmingham will deliver the `Drs. Minnie and V.I. Mathan Oration on Liver Transplant Pathology’ during the CME on January 24.

About 300 delegates from India and the Middle East including 100 from the CMC will attend the workshop and CME.
