The dispensary established for the welfare of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) employees is functioning without a duty doctor for over six months, M. Sundarraj, District Secretary, CITU said here on Friday.

In spite of repeated appeals to the officials, nothing transpired in the last six months. A doctor attached to this dispensary retired six months ago. After that a physician was deputed from Tirunelveli to offer consultation once in a week. He too retired a few months ago. Since then, the dispensary has been functioning without a doctor, he alleged.

When contacted a top TNSTC official, on condition of anonymity, said that the duty doctor retired three months ago, and a doctor deputed from Tirunelveli after that attended to the patients till last month and retired.

The department has written to the higher officials to appoint a doctor as an interim arrangement till the regular post was filled up by the government. Efforts are on to appoint a temporary doctor soon.

The official also said that the dispensary was functioning with five staff including a pharmacist, nurse etc. Minor injuries of the TNSTC crew members and technical staff were attended by the paramedical staff.

Few crew members of TNSTC expressed their displeasure on the absence of a qualified doctor for over three months.
