The office has been functioning out of a rented building along Bhavani Road.

Construction work is expected to take six months for completion. The office of the District Environmental Engineer will also be equipped with a testing laboratory and a continuous air quality monitoring station, a senior official said.

Of late, the TNPCB has been strict in implementing Zero Liquid Discharge norms mandated by the Supreme Court. Effluent flow is metered and the discharges and salt recovery are documented and monitored, the sources said.

The industries have been instructed to use only dry firewood for operating boilers. There have been instances of industries using firewood with certain dampness levels due to which excessive smoke gets generated.
