T.N. to base medical admissions on NEET

85% seats reserved for State board

Admission would be based on marks scored in the NEET.

Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar said in the Assembly that NEET will be the basis for medical/dental admission and 85% of the seats meant for Tamil Nadu students would be reserved for those from the State board.

The remaining seats in the State quota would be for students of other boards. Overall, 15% of the medical seats have been allotted to the all-India quota.

A total of 3,050 seats are available at 22 government medical colleges as well as seats from the Raja Muthiah Medical College. Of these, 456 will be allotted to the 15% all-India quota. Of the remaining 2,594 seats, 2,203 will be available to State board students and the remaining 391 seats to students of other boards.

The order, explaining the norms for filling medical seats, was issued on June 22.

Medical counselling to start on July 17

Health Minister C. Vijaya Baskar said the Assembly had passed two Bills requesting the Centre to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET and both the bills are waiting for the President’s approval. “In the present circumstances, the State government has taken into consideration the concerns of parents and students and has taken steps to ensure that the representation of students from Tamil Nadu is not reduced,” he said.
