Thousands participate in Urs festival

Thousands of people participated in the annual Urs festival of the Hakkeem Sheikh Dawood Aulia Dargah at Jambavanodai near Muthupettai in this district in the early hours of Monday.

As part of the 713th Urs festival, decorated sandal pots were carried after special prayers by a team of Muttawalis led by Chief Muttawali Bakker Ali Sahib and after the customary circumambulation of the dargah, the sanctified spot was anointed with sandal paste to mark the high point of the festival amidst prayers by devotees from various communities and religions.

This year’s Urs commenced on February 20 and every day special events were conducted to mark the festival period. Police led by Tiruvarur SP Jeyachandran and Additional SP Anarkali Begum provided security during the events that passed off peacefully.

A local holiday was been declared in this district for Monday on account of the festival.
