Ministers make a beeline for banner licence

A number of residents in various parts of the State have started reporting problems pertaining to illegal banners by political parties.

Following opposition to illegal banners by city residents, Cabinet Ministers have started making a beeline to the civic body to get licence for erecting digital banners on roads.

Municipal Administration Minister S.P.Velumani has received permission from the Chennai Corporation and the District Administration for erecting 100 digital banners on key stretches, including Cathedral Road, Kamarajar Salai and Dr.Radhakrishnan Salai, which are likely to be frequented by Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

Last month, the Monitoring Committee for regulation of digital banners/hoarding/placards invited residents from all parts of the State to offer their suggestions to the Office of the Chairman, Monitoring Committee (Regulating erection of digital banners/hoardings/placards in the State), Corporation of Chennai, Ripon Buildings, 16, Poonamallee High Road, Chennai – 600003. Most of the illegal banners and hoardings have been reported in the Chennai Metropolitan Area, affecting normal life in various residential and commercial neighbourhoods.

Following a series of meetings with senior officials of the Corporation, other local bodies and district administration, the monitoring committee initiated sensitisation programmes for political parties.
