Home Minister E. Valsaraj, who also holds Health and Family Welfare portfolio, on Friday requested parents and students not to panic over the issue of Medical Council of India refusing to renew permission for Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute to admit its second batch of students.
Speaking to The Hindu over the phone from Chennai, Mr. Valsaraj said that the college faced a similar situation last year when the MCI rejected approval to begin admissions citing various deficiencies. The government then was able to overcome all hurdles and begin the admissions on time, he said.
Terming the letter sent by the MCI to the health secretary as “vague,” he said the assessment report had not pointed to any specific deficiency on the basis of which the renewal was denied. In order to know the right picture, the director of the college would meet the MCI officials next week. Mr. Valsaraj also said if there is any major issue to be sorted out, he would meet Union Health Minister, Gulam Nabi Azad.
