Hundreds of pilgrims offered broomsticks to St. Thomas Church under Sirunaickenpatti Parish as part of St. Thomas festival which was celebrated with religious fervour here on Sunday.

Brushing aside the heat wave, devotees stood in a long queue to offer broomsticks.

Offering broomsticks was the speciality of the festival. All sections of people, irrespective of their religion, offered broomsticks to the church, believing that St. Thomas would wipe out diseases and pains from their body and mind as broomstick cleaned dust on the floor. They also offered pepper, salt and candles as part of their offerings. The festival commenced on April 8 with ‘thiru bali.’
