The murder of Mahalakshmi (inset) took place in broad daylight outside St. Joseph’s College in Cuddalore on Thursday.

A woman student studying second year post-graduate course in Social Work was murdered in broad daylight in front of St.Joseph’s College in the heart of the town by a youth who she spurned, on Thursday afternoon.

The accused later surrendered at the Cuddalore New Town Police Station.

D.Mahalakshmi (22) is the daughter of Dharmalingam residing at Kathandikuppam near Kadampuliyur. When she, along with four of her classmates, was coming out of the college after the forenoon session, P.Tamilselvan (32) of Panchankuppam, a diploma holder in mechanical engineering, offered to drop her on his motorcycle, police sources said. But she turned down his offer.

In a fit of anger Tamilselvan stabbed her in the neck with a knife. Tamilselvan, a relative of the victim, was on friendly terms with Mahalakshmi before he left for Singapore for a job, the sources said.

He was said to be in constant touch with her and sent her money occasionally. However, she ignored his calls from overseas after sometime.

After he landed in Cuddalore a couple of months ago, Mahalakshmi made her indifference towards him clear.
