Women to be trained in self-defence

Even while women have been excelling in different fields, the threats they face in various fronts in the form sexual abuse, and domestic violence has been a cause for concern to governments, and people from all walks of life.

The State Government has launched various initiatives to check sexual abuse at workplace, and domestic violence.

In the first phase, the government has decided to impart self-defence training to a select group of women through its Puthu Vaazhvu Thittam.

The government has allotted Rs. 4.5 crore for imparting the training to the members of village poverty reduction committees, and panchayat level federation of women self-help groups.

It has proposed to impart training to 71,836 women in 4,174 panchayats in 26 districts.

The training at Masinayakkanpatti village near Ayothiyapattinam was inaugurated by District Collector K. Maharabushanam on Wednesday.

He said that experts from the Makkal Katral Maiyam will impart training in physical exercise, and karate, and judo, for six days.

The women will be taught to tackle even armed assailants using bare hands. Each team will comprise 30 members.

Mr. Maharabushanam said that the training programmes will be conducted in the panchayats in Ayothiyapattinam, Bethanayakkanpalayam, Gengavalli, Thalaivasal, Vazhappadi, and Yercaud. K. Moorthy,
