A retired Veterinary surgeon and an office-bearer of the Tamizhaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) were among the six persons arrested by police in connection with the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) youth wing leader C. Ramesh. After completing the investigation, a special team, which acted under the direct supervision of Superintendent of Police N. Manivannan, arrested the six persons, including V. Devaraj (25), the main accused, and his father, on Wednesday night and launched a dragnet for three others.
Ramesh, BJP youth wing leader of Kalayarkoil union in Sivaganga district, was hacked to death on Paramakudi-Muthukulathur Road. The police said that a five-member gang waylaid his car and murdered him on Monday night to wreak vengeance on him over personal enmity. The police said Ramesh assaulted Devaraj, who worked as driver for Balakrishnan (59), the retired veterinary surgeon, after he accidently hit Ramesh’s car a month ago, and it was the motive for the murder. After he felt humiliated, Devaraj and his father R. Velusamy (52) hatched a conspiracy and carried out the murder with the help of their accomplices and financial support from Balakrishnan, the police said.
The special team arrested Devaraj, Velusamy, Balakrishnan, Davamani and I. Suresh (32), while M. Mahendiran (40) surrendered before a Village Administrative Officer. They were produced before a magistrate court which remanded them in judicial custody.
