Over one lakh people from different parts of Vellore and adjoining districts thronged here on Friday to witness the annual `Sirasu’ festival of Arulmigu Gangaiamman Temple.
The `Sirasu’ (head) festival is held annually on the first day of the Tamil month, `Vaikasi’. After performing `abhishekam’ to the presiding deity at the Muthialamman Temple in Dharanampettai on Friday morning, thousands of devotees took the `Sirasu’ of Gengaiamman in a procession. Playing of percussion instruments and dancing by devotees in different attires marked the festivities. They went up to the Gengaiamman Temple in Gopalapuram and fitted the `Sirasu’ on the decorated body of Sandalachi. Devotees offered worship to the `Sirasu’ of Gengaiamman all along the route.
