The thought that simple efforts could protect vital organs such as kidneys seldom catches the attention of many. But it should at least on a day dedicated to the organ’s health.

On World Kidney Day (March 12), the emphasis is on protecting the organs through preventive screening.

It was with the objective of preventing kidney diseases that the International Society of Nephrology brought in the World Kidney Day, said Santosh Varughese, professor of Nephrology, Christian Medical College (CMC).

“This year, the theme is kidney health for all. We hope to achieve this by improving awareness about kidney diseases, causes and prevention,” he said. Most of the times, kidney diseases occurred when least expected. Diabetes and hypertension were important culprits causing kidney diseases.

“Over-the-counter pills, painkillers are important causes of kidney diseases. People should take medications that are advised by physicians,” he added.

“People at risk for kidney diseases are those with diabetes, hypertension and family history of kidney diseases. Healthy lifestyle, preventing obesity, staying away from drug abuses and over the counter chronic analgesic use is important. Some indigenous medications may contain heavy metals that are detrimental to kidney health,” Suceena Alexander, associate professor, Department of Nephrology, CMC added.

Doctors expressed concern that India did not have a population-based health screening and people often were diagnosed with kidney ailments by chance medical examinations.

While the general population could go for blood and urine tests once, those at risk should go for screening every year. “If not detected early, diabetics might develop diabetic nephropathy. This is preventable with proper control of blood sugar level. If it occurs, then there should be regular follow up,” Dr. Varughese said. He said increased water intake will help, while a healthy diet that is low on salt and rich in fruits and vegetables is ideal for healthy individuals.

“A large amount of kidney diseases are silent. It is important to understand that kidneys are vital organs, important for the healthy life of an individual. Preventive screening is the key to avoid kidney diseases,” he insisted. CMC organised a screening camp on the occasion. Approximately, 650 persons were screened. A patient get-together and awareness stalls were part of the day.
