SID team continues probe, searches for weapons

A police team searching for clues in the bushes along the Maravaneri extension Road, near Salem Town railway station on Tuesday.

On the second day of its probe into the murder of BJP State general secretary V. Ramesh, the Special Investigation Division on Tuesday searched for weapons used in the killing.

The areas searched included the stormwater drain near the auditor’s office on Maranaveri Road and the bushes outside the Salem Town railway station.

But, the search did not yield any weapon. The team also enquired with the watchman, who was at the spot when the crime occurred. The police protection was given to the watchman.

The police suspected that the killers might have committed the crime around 9.15 p.m. on Friday and fled to the Salem Town railway station to board the Salem – Chennai Egmore Express that arrived at 9.22 p.m.

The distance between the crime spot and the railway station was less than half-a-kilometre, the sources added.

The special team was at the murder spot and the railway station for over five hours on Tuesday, exploring this possibility.

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko said that after paying homage to Ramesh at the deceased’s house that the murder was committed to create panic in the State. The killing of some leaders over the last one year had shattered peace in the State. The police must take stern action to root out this problem.
