The Tamil Nadu government on Monday informed the Supreme Court that sedition charges against AAP candidate S.P. Udayakumar and others involved in Kudankulam nuclear plant agitation could not be withdrawn.
In its response to the notice issued by the court whether it had complied with the earlier direction to withdraw all cases against the agitators, the State, through its counsel B. Balaji, said a total of 248 cases were registered against the members of People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy.
Of this 101 cases related to violence against private individuals and government officials and cases of laying siege through sea.

It said it was not possible to withdraw the 101 cases as the crimes committed were very serious.
“If these cases are withdrawn, law breakers will be out of moral fear and common innocent public will suffer due to lawlessness in the area and government officials would lose the trust off the government,” the counter said.
