Secretary of milk cooperative society held on graft charge

Caught taking ₹16,000 for regularising an employee

Sleuths attached to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC), Vellore, on Friday arrested the secretary of Sholinghur Milk Cooperative Society on the charge of demanding and accepting bribe. Apart from the bribe amount, police seized unaccounted cash of ₹1,70,000 from the office of the society’s president.

A team led by M. Balasubramanian, Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police, DVAC, nabbed S. R. Vijayaragavan, 44, secretary of the Sholingur Milk Cooperative Society based on a complaint from S. Rajendran, 33, a resident of Ailampadi village, who was a clerk in the society.

According to the officials, Mr. Rajendran was working as a clerk in the society on a temporary basis. On September 14, a resolution was passed in the society to regularise 19 employees including three clerical employees.

But Vijayaragavan demanded ₹20,000 from Mr. Rajendran to implement the resolution. However, he finally settled for ₹16,000.

Police arrested him while he took money from Mr. Rajendran. An official said they seized the amount of ₹16,000 besides unaccounted cash of ₹1,70,000 from the office of the society’s president Nagaraj.
