Residents of Thazhanguda near here have become apprehensive of sea incursion in this part of the Cuddalore district.

Coconut groves on the seashore that were once dense have now turned scanty. The sea has already advanced by about 150 m towards fishermen habitations in Thazhanguda, rooting out coconut trees in that stretch.

According to S. Karnan (27), a resident, there are not less than 130 fibre boats in Thazhnguda. Even a couple of months ago, there was ample space between the sea and the shore in which they could conveniently berth boats.

However, the land mass has greatly reduced and the space left now is hardly sufficient to accommodate long boats. If placed in such a narrow strip of land, the boats face a threat of getting damaged.

The residents had submitted several representations to authorities, pleading for putting up groynes, but in vain, Mr. Karnan said.
