Since the ‘Know Our Birds’ training programme announced by the Forest Department for school students at Vellode Bird Sanctuary has not elicited the desired response, officials have approached the School Education Department to ensure adequacy of enrolment.
The programme was envisaged for start during the summer vacation for providing students of levels VIII to XII a rare opportunity to spend time in the midst of nature.
The training would require students to watch birds, and learning the characteristics and living pattern of native and foreign bird species at the Wetland Bird Sanctuary.

The sanctuary located in Vadamugam Vellode village, close to the Erode-Chennimalai road in Perundurai Taluk is flocked by more than 100 native and foreign species for nesting and procreation. It figures among one of the 10 prominent bird sanctuaries in Tamil Nadu.
Though the information was publicised through media, it had apparently not reached the student community.
“We have approached the Chief Educational Officer to disseminate the information through headmasters,” District Forest Officer of Erode Nagarajan said.

The training on environment and birds, according to officials, will take place on Saturdays and Sundays.
Schedule
The schedule encompasses watching various species of birds with binoculars provided by the Forest Department, discussion about the observation, and interaction with ornithologists based on a power point presentation. The students who go through the process will receive certificates.
