Displaying religious amity, students of diverse faiths celebrated ‘Samathuva Pongal’ at the Syed Hameedha Arts and Science College at Kilakarai near here recently.
The college wore a festive look as the faculty, management staff and boys turned up in the traditional dhotis, while women management staff, faculty and girls in silk and designer saris.
Students of all religions sinking their religious differences enthusiastically took part in the festival of harvest, also celebrated as ‘Tamizhar Thirunal’.

The college management organised the function for the sixth successive year on Sunday.
Girls, assisted by faculty, cooked Pongal and distributed it to all in the college, while others gathered hailed ‘Pongalo Pongal’.
The students were also given sugarcane pieces.

Abul Hasan Sathali, Principal, who released the college magazine for 2014, said the Pongal celebration helped the students to bury their religious and communal differences and mingle freely.
A debate on the relevance of arts and literature was organised and it was presided over by Prof Abdul Samad from Hajee Karutha Rowther Howdia College, Uthamapalayam.
S. Nazar, Head of the Department, Business Administration, and Mr. Sheik Abdullah, Head of the Department of Mathematics, organised the festival.
