Rs. 12 crore sanctioned for eight school buildings

A sum of Rs. 12 crore has been sanctioned for the construction of classrooms for eight high schools under the Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan. Each school will have 12 classrooms and toilet blocks and the work will be taken up in course of time, after finalising the tenders, official sources told The Hindu on Monday.

The schools selected are located in interior villages and lacked adequate infrastructure, particularly class rooms. The high schools where the new classrooms would be built in Varpattu, Vaithur, Kudumiyanmalai, Kilikudi, Kaayampatti, Vagaivasal, Melapattu, and Perungadu. These schools had spacious grounds in their vicinity and the classrooms would be constructed shortly.

The sources said that work on the construction of additional classrooms and laboratories was in progress at 44 high and higher secondary schools.

A sum of Rs. 10.86 crore had been sanctioned for this infrastructure. Most of these schools were upgraded from the status of middle to high school, and obviously in need of classroom buildings. In all, 85 classrooms were under construction at these 44 schools.

The unit cost for each classroom was Rs.8.53 lakh while it would be Rs. 10.03 lakh for laboratory. All laboratory equipment and furniture were being provided at the laboratories.
