‘Role of teachers has changed over time’

City teacher among those who won the National award on Teachers’ Day

“An investment that a teacher makes in a child is extremely important as we are bringing up the future generation of the country and it is this passion that teachers need to have,” says G.J. Manohar, Headmaster and Correspondent of the Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School in the city.

Mr. Manohar was among the 22 teachers who received the National award for teachers from Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu on Teachers’ Day in New Delhi. He also later met President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapathi Bhavan with the other awardees.

A day after receiving his award, Mr. Manohar was given a rousing reception at the school premises in Chetpet where he was welcomed by the students and faculty members.

“This is an honour not only for me but also for the institution. The role that teachers play has greatly changed over the years and they have gone on from just limiting themselves to classroom teaching to becoming mentors for students,” he said.

Mr. Manohar became the headmaster of the MCC School in 2006.

Stating that more students who were academically inclined should take up teaching, Mr. Manohar said that it shouldn’t be simply taken as a profession but should be a passion.
