The 29th Road Safety Week observance began with an awareness rally in the city on Monday.
A slew of programmes have been planned by the Regional Transport Authorities in the city and suburban areas from April 23 to 29.
The road safety awareness rally was flagged off by District Collector T.N. Hariharan in the presence of Coimbatore City Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sujith Kumar and other officials at the Coimbatore RTO (Central).

On the sidelines of the programme, Regional Transport Officer (Central) S. Udhayakumar told reporters that accident rate across the nation has reduced by 8.5 % compared to last year, due to the proactive measures taken to ensure road safety.
Another rally to create awareness on the importance of wearing helmet and seat belt would be taken out on Tuesday by the employees of the two-wheeler and car dealers, call taxi drivers and drivers of police vehicles in the city.
Similarly, an awareness programme on speeding, overloading, transporting people in load vehicles, drunk driving, jumping red signals and using mobile phone while driving would be held at SNR College on Wednesday. A special eye screening camp would be conducted for the staff of TNSTC, drivers of software companies, educational institutions in association with leading eye hospitals in the city.

Besides this, street plays, distribution of pamphlets at check posts, toll plazas and bus stations would be organised.
On April 29, a pledge would be administered to drivers by the organisations concerned between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The General Manager of TNSTC - Coimbatore Division, G. Govindaraj, and General Manager (Technical) Anbu Abraham, and other officials distributed pamphlets on road safety awareness to TNSTC crew members and the general public at Gandhipuram town bus stand on Monday.
