The Mahila Court judge Thirumagal on Thursday awarded jail term, and imposed a fine of Rs. 60,000 on M. Boopathy (34), a garment trader of Onnakarai village, for causing suicide of wife Rathika in October, 2003.

The prosecution case was that Boopathy harassed Rathika for more dowry though he had already received Rs. 45,000, and about 160 gm of jewellery. Unable to bear the torture, she, along with their two daughters jumped in front of a running train. One of the daughters escaped.

A case was registered under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.

Dowry harassment

The Mahila Court judge Thirumagal awarded seven years imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 30,000 on Ravi (28) of Pidiredy village in Kelamangalam for harassing to death wife Nagamani in 2011. Though Ravi received a dowry of Rs. 2 lakh, and about 100 gm of jewellery, he insisted on more.

Unable to bear the torture, Nagamani attempted self-immolation in vain in 2010. When the harassment continued, she committed suicide by hanging in 2011, after killing their son.
