Demanding regular and adequate supply of drinking water, around 200 women from Naduvaikurichi Major near Sankarankovil in the district came to the Collectorate with empty pots and submitted a petition to Collector M. Karunakaran on Monday.
The petitioners, led by C. Murugan of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, submitted the petition to the Collector during the weekly grievance day meeting.
The petitioners said the Naduvaikurichi Major village, having the population of over 7,000, was housing a government higher secondary school, two anganvadis, veterinary clinic, post office, revenue inspector’s office, community hall etc. However, there was no permanent arrangement to ensure regular and adequate supply of drinking water to the residents.

“Since this region has failed to receive good rainfall even during the monsoon in the past 15 years, almost all wells have dried up. Consequently, there is no farming operation in this region and the villagers have been forced to depend on the national rural employment generation programme. At the same time, every family has to spend a minimum of Rs. 75 a day for buying drinking water.
Hence, steps should be taken for giving drinking water to the villagers by extending the combined drinking water scheme meant for Sernthamaram or Vasudevanallur,” said Mr. Murugan.

Cadres of Tamil Nadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam submitted a petition to the Collector seeking the appointment of a Unani practitioner in the government hospital at Melapalayam. The petitioners said the unani doctor at Melapalayam government hospital was transferred to some other place eight months ago and the post remained vacant as no step had been taken to fill it.
As most of the residents of Melapalayam were using unani formulations for the past several decades, the post should be filled at the earliest, the petitioners said.
