A group of people from a village near Vasudevanallur submitted a petition to Collector M. Karunakaran on Monday, seeking better infrastructure in their village “which was being neglected on the basis of caste”.
The petitioners from Velayuthapuram near Vasudevanallur in the district alleged that their hamlet, falling under Kudalur panchayat, was being neglected deliberately by the local body administration since Dalits alone were living in their village.
Hence, the Collector should either force the Kudalur village panchayat administration to carry out development works in Velayuthapuram or recommend to the government to declare it as a separate panchayat.

Another group of people from Naduvapatti near Sankarankovil said their village was witnessing frequent clashes owing to a feud between two groups of people. It said that since officials were backing one particular group, the enmity between the two groups had come to stay in the hamlet permanently to give sleepless nights to the residents.
Hence, the police and revenue officials should be instructed to be neutral in this issue, they said.

“If the situation is allowed to continue, we will surrender our ration cards,” the petitioners said.
Probe sought
A couple from Old Pettai on the city outskirts, Avudaiyappan and Esakkiammal, submitted a petition to Dr. Karunakaran seeking a probe into the mysterious death of their daughter, who was married to a youth from the same area a few months ago.
They said that their daughter Vellaiyammal was found hanging in the house of her husband recently and her husband and in-laws performed the last rites in a hurry.
As the girl was being harassed by the husband, his parents and a few relatives who demanded more dowry, the case should be probed, they appealed.
