Residents of Periyar Colony in ward 13 in Seelapadi panchayat blocked Tiruchi Main Road as their houses were flooded with sewage water on Wednesday night.

They complained that drainage channels were clogged in the entire area owing to a block in the main drainage channel near their colony. “We had appealed to sanitary workers and to the panchayat administration to remove the block in the main channel for a long time. But no action had been taken by them. Now, sewage water has been flowing on streets and entering houses in low-lying areas in the colony,” they complained.

Traffic was disrupted for 25 minutes. Buses going to Tiruchi, Vadamadurai and Iyyalur were stranded in both directions of the road.

The police rushed to the spot and assured the agitators that they would take immediate action in this regard. They also advised the panchayat administration to send sanitary workers to clear the clogged drains.

Later, the people withdrew their agitation.
