The Union government is showing urgency in select projects such as the India-based Neutrino Observatory project, which posed a threat to natural resources in Theni district, said Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko here on Saturday.

He was speaking at a felicitation function organised by the MDMK, farmers associations from southern districts and Mullaperiyar farmers' association among others for his contribution to increasing the water level of the dam to 142 ft.

Party functionaries presented Mr. Vaiko with a sword and a statue of John Pennycuick, who built the reservoir.

Slamming the Centre, he said projects, which were rejected by States such as Maharashtra and Goa found space in Tamil Nadu.

“People here may feel that Vaiko is opposing development and some political opponents may even be critical...” However, he asserted, “mankind is of paramount importance above all the so-called development. Hence, he called the youth to join him in yet another big fight against the Neutrino project.”

The MDMK leader was critical of the State government's policy on liquor and urged the government to shut liquor shops.

He said the MDMK would struggle for common man's problems and play a role to facilitate people to live peacefully in Tamil Nadu.
