Registration of birth should be done within 12 months from the date of birth of a child, and the government had made birth registration mandatory, said Collector N. Venkatachalam.

Presiding over a meeting on health at the Colletorate here on Thursday, he said that birth certificates were issued for free to parents. The certificate should be issued before the discharge of mother and baby from the hospital or primary health centre. The health staff should take the efforts to record all births.

The State government has insisted that all children who were born on or before January 1, 2000, should register their names on or before December 31, 2014. Birth certificate was essential for school admission, to prove age, obtain passport and driving licence and avail other benefits from the government, he pointed out.

The Collector also cautioned that there should be no delay in handing over the bodies to relatives after post-mortem. Doctors should complete the post-mortem process without delay. Those responsible for such a delay will be punished severely, he said.
