R-Day celebrated with fervour in Salem, Namakkal

Colourful dance presentation by the students, spectacular parade by police personnel and NCC cadets and distribution of welfare assistance marked the 66{+t}{+h}Republic Day celebrations at Mahatma Gandhi stadium here on Monday.

Collector K. Maharabushanam hoisted the national flag and accepted the guard of honour. He also honoured freedom fighters and distributed welfare assistance to 103 beneficiaries to the tune of Rs. 1.59 crore. Also, 22 persons including, N. Mohan, Dean, Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital, received certificates for best performances. The one-hour long cultural show by 1,174 students from eight schools was the main highlight of the celebrations as students’ danced to patriotic songs and also theme-based songs. A skid by students that stressed for wearing helmet while riding two-wheeler was a strong message carried out to prevent accidents and deaths.

District Revenue Officer S. Selvaraj, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Salem Range Vidya D. Kulkarni, City Police Commissioner A. Amalraj, Superintendent of Police R. Sakthivel, Deputy Commissioners of Police, officials from various government departments participated.

In Namakkal, Collector V. Dakshinamoorthy unfurled the national flag on the Collectorate premises ground and accepted the guard of honour. He distributed welfare assistance to 395 persons to the tune of Rs. 2.04 crore. The canine sleuths of the police dog squad exhibited their skills in sniffing and other activities that received good applause from the crowd.

As many as 625 students from various schools performed cultural shows that were a highlight of the celebrations. Police officers and government officers were felicitated for their services. P.R. Sundaram MP, Superintendent of Police S. R. Senthilkumar, District Revenue Officer V.R. Subbulakshmi and officials from various departments participated.

Likewise, Republic Day was celebrated in Government Higher Secondary School in Athanur, Jairam Public School, Gandhi Ashram in Tiruchengode, Tamil Maanila Congress and by other educational institutions and industrial establishments.
