Renovation of eight wards to be taken up at a cost of Rs. 12 lakh

The renovated female surgical ward at the government hospital in Ramanathapuram.

The Government Headquarters hospital here will soon be augmented with two Intensive Care Units. Eight wards will also be renovated. The upgrade will cost Rs. 32 lakh.

The female surgical ward on the first floor, which was in a dilapidated state, was recently renovated at a cost of Rs. 1.5 lakh. .The Public Works Department (PWD) is overseeing the renovation work under directions from Collector K.Nanthakumar.

The open drainage channels on both sides of the entrance to the main building have been covered after connecting the channels to the underground sewage system. The area not only presents a neat look now with paver blocks but is completely free from the stench emanating from the open drain.

A ramp with handrails has been laid at the entrance of the main building for the benefit of differently abled people.

C.Jayadurai, Assistant Executive Engineer, PWD, who was executing the works, said the eight wards were being renovated at a cost of Rs. 12 lakh and the work would be completed in the next two months. The Collector has seen the renovated female surgical ward and was satisfied with the work, he said.

He said two high standard ICUs with oxygen supply system have been constructed at a total cost of Rs. 20 lakh. Final touches were being given to the Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care (CEmONC) ICU and Paediatrics ICU and they would be inaugurated soon. The ICUs were built using Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme fund, he added. The Operation theatre (with four tables) and the post operative ward were also being renovated, he added.

As all the eight wards were utilised to the maximum and the newly admitted in-patients have to be accommodated on the veranda, it has been proposed to build a new 100-bedded ward, behind the main building at a cost of Rs. 2.75 crore, sources said.
