Rameswaram fishermen call off strike

November 18, 2013 01:47 pm | Updated May 26, 2016 08:00 am IST - RAMESWARAM:

The Rameswaram fishermen, who launched an indefinite strike on November 6 protesting against Sri Lankan Navy arresting them and seizing their trawlers on charges of illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters, decided to end the strike and resume fishing from Monday.

Leaders of 11 fishermen associations held an informal discussion on Sunday and decided to end the strike as a majority of fishermen could not afford to continue the strike in the absence of any alternative livelihood, P. Sesu Raju, secretary, coastal mechanised boat fishermen association, said.

He said the fishermen associations launched the strike, expecting the Centre and the State to prevail upon Sri Lanka to stop the arrest of fishermen, but there had been no sign of any relief.
