Water starved Coonoor and surroundings like Wellington received heavy rains for the third consecutive night, starting late on Monday night.

Consequently, during the wee hours of the day a huge tree fell at K. B. Line in the Supply Depot area near Wellington, damaging a tourist taxi which was parked on the road. No one was inside.

Incessant rains triggered minor mud slips at a few places. The early morning Coonoor - Ooty train suffered a delay of about half an hour owing to a mud slip on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) track at Wellington.

The Hindu revealed that the rains had helped improve the drinking water position in Coonoor which has for the past few months been experiencing a severe water scarcity.

However residents regretted that owing to the work on de-silting the Raliah Dam, the main source of water to Coonoor, there was a difficulty in storing the storm water.

During the 24 hour period ending 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday Coonoor recorded 47 mm of rainfall, Kundah Bridge: 55 mm, Geddhai: 72 mm, Burliar: 26 mm, Kodanadu: 19 mm and Upper Bhavani: 18 mm.
