After a gap of about 10 days, two units of Tuticorin Thermal Power Station (TTPS) resumed production on Tuesday evening, sources told The Hindu .

Production from the fourth and the first units – each with a production capacity of 210 mw – was suspended on May 15 and 16 respectively as the load dispatch centre at Chennai instructed TTPS authorities to keep the units in a standby mode, citing low demand for electricity consumption in the State.

Both these units were lit up around 11 a.m. on Tuesday. The fourth unit got synchronised at 3.14 p.m., and the first unit at 3.57 p.m. Sources said that the normal per day electricity consumption in the State was between 15,000 mw and 16,000 mw. The wind energy production in the State touched 3,000 mw last week. Normally, the wind energy generation was expected begin by the end of May or at the beginning of Southwest monsoon in early June. But, this year the wind stared blowing early. Only during the wind season and the subsequent monsoon season, power generating units would be overhauled. Hydroelectric power stations set up along the Western Ghats would start functioning after the onset of the monsoon, sources added.
