Probe war crimes: Karunanidhi

January 11, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:54 am IST - CHENNAI:

DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Saturday urged Maithripala Sirisena, the new Sri Lankan President, to allow an international inquiry into the atrocities committed against Tamils in the last leg of the civil war.

In a statement here, he also urged Mr Sirisena to give adequate powers on governments in the North and East.

It was against political decency to celebrate the electoral victory of someone in another country but the Tamils could welcome the defeat of Mr Rajapaksa, who had killed Tamils.

Mr. Karunanidhi said the new Sri Lankan President, who secured the votes of minorities, should keep in mind the reason behind his victory and take steps to ensure that the minorities were given power on a par with the majority. “He should also see to it that Tamils are given more powers than what has been promised in the 13th Amendment. Demilitarisation of North-East and providing basic amenities including education and health services should be his priority,” he said. Mr. Karunanidhi wanted Sri Lanka to give Tamil language a status on a par with Sinhala and ensure the livelihood of Tamil Nadu fishermen was not affected by the Sri Lankan Navy.
