Governor Banwarilal Purohit on Saturday said he wholeheartedly supported the country-wide demand for conducting High Court proceedings in the respective regional languages, in addition to English. He went a step ahead and stated that President Ram Nath Kovind too was in favour of the idea.
Inaugurating a day-long silver jubilee conference of Tamil law journal Satta Kadir , the Governor turned towards Madras High Court judges C.T. Selvam and R. Mahadevan and said they might be aware of the President’s stand on the issue reportedly expressed during an interaction with the High Court judges in December 2017.
“During the course of the day, I notice that there will be discussions on three important topics. One is the State official language as an additional language for Indian High Courts. I support this,” the Governor said amidst loud applause from the gathering, which included former judges, Bar leaders and senior counsel.

Turning towards the two High Court judges seated along with him on the dais, he said: “Perhaps you know it. He (President) prescribed that this should be adopted.” the Governor asserted.
As part of the inaugural ceremony, the Governor conferred the ‘Needhi Tamil Arignar’ award, instituted by the law journal, on former Supreme Court judge AR. Lakshmanan who had also held the post of the chairman of Law Commission.
