Pongal celebrations

Students of Shrimati Indira Gandhi College celebrated Pongal with gaiety during a function got up under the joint auspices of the Fine Arts Association and National Service Scheme. Attired in conventional costumes, students prepared the ‘pongal’ and offered worship to Sun God marking significance of the festival. They also presented a folk dance on the occasion. “This is one of the annual celebrations at the college with a view to inculcating values of our tradition and culture to the students,” said a press release from the college.  

Seminar on Indian culture

The Department of English, National College, organised a two-day national seminar on ‘Indian culture in Indian English literature.’ K. Thulasiah Vandayar, secretary and correspondent, AVVM Sri Pushpam College, who inaugurated the seminar, urged the students to rediscover the culture of the past and the present by reading the good books. K. Anbarasu, principal, National College, and R. Elavarasu, head, Department of English, spoke.

Sale of vermicompost begins

The Linnaeus Club of Department of Botany of J.J. College of Arts and Science in Pudukottai has started a novel venture to produce vermicompost and market it to needy farmers. Priced at Rs.10 a kg, the compost has been prepared by members of the club on two acres of land.

“We have set up three ditches to prepare one tonne of compost a month,” says N. Subaramanian, secretary of the college. M. Balakrishnan, managing director, Arasi Agro Farm in Poongudi near here, and Narayanswamy, Assistant Horticulture Officer, purchased the vermicompost. S. Sivasubramanian, Head, Department of Botany, said the compost yard offered all undergraduate students practical exposure to techniques on environment conservation. The club has 500 kg of compost.

Meet on management

Murali Rajan, Associate Professor of Finance, The Kania School of Management, University of Scranton, Pennsylvania, USA, highlighted the need for students and researchers to enhance their knowledge and skills while inaugurating an international conference on ‘Advanced Management - Challenges in Knowledge Era,’ organised by the Jamal Institute of Management. He released two journals – International Journal of Management and Jamal Academic Research Journal. Nearly 400 delegates participated in the conference.

NSS unit inaugurated

The NSS unit of Deen College, Mayiladuthurai, was inaugurated by R. Selvanayagam, syndicate member, Bharathidasan University.

A. Rafiudeen, chairman of the college, and G. Vasudevan, principal, were present.

Oratorical contest

An oratorical competition on ‘Use of technology and innovation in promoting good governance’ was conducted at AVC College of Engineering, Mayiladuthurai, in connection with Good Governance Day celebrations. J. Manikandan, chairman, AVC Group of Institutions, gave away prizes to students in the presence of C. Sundaraj, principal.
